Magazine, The immigrant Experience
Every year on the 25th of February, Kuwait celebrates its National Day. A day that marks the ascension of one its heroes Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah’s to the throne in 1950 as well as his death in 1965. Becoming Emir of the State of Kuwait, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah led the diplomatic initiative that resulted in the Gulf State declaring independence from the British Empire on June 19, 1961, and signing a new constitution affirming Kuwait’s status as a sovereign state in 1962.
In recognition of Sheikh Al-Sabah’s diplomatic accomplishment, Kuwait celebrates its national day each year on this day.
Also, in conjunction with Kuwait National Day was the commemoration of Kuwait Liberation Day always celebrated on February 26th. This holiday marks the day when Kuwait was liberated from Iraqi occupation in 1991.
In Los Angeles, California H.E. Faisal I. Al Houli, Consul General of the State of Kuwait hosted a reception in honor of both celebrations. In attendance were members of the diplomatic corps, community leaders and various cultural representatives and nationalities.
As always there was plenty to eat including delicious authentic Kuwaiti cuisine.
Happy National Day, Kuwait!
