In celebration of Independence Day 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has embarked on a significant initiative to welcome approximately 11,000 new citizens across more than 195 naturalization ceremonies from June 28 to July 5. This annual tradition not only commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 but also underscores the nation’s commitment to embracing immigrants and the benefits of U.S. citizenship.
Throughout fiscal year 2023, USCIS welcomed 878,500 new citizens, and by mid-2024, it has already celebrated 589,400 new citizens, while also making strides in reducing naturalization processing backlogs. USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou expressed gratitude for the privilege of administering the Oath of Allegiance during the Independence Day celebrations, highlighting how new citizens enrich America’s diversity and character.
Independence Day activities include special naturalization ceremonies nationwide, including notable locations like George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Battleship New Jersey, Gateway Arch National Park in Missouri, and Fort Clatsop in Oregon. These ceremonies not only mark a milestone in the lives of new citizens but also recognize their commitment and contributions to the United States.
USCIS remains committed to accessibility in the naturalization process, particularly under Executive Order 14012. Initiatives such as the Outstanding Americans by Choice program and grants to immigrant-serving organizations aim to integrate and support new Americans. Furthermore, USCIS continues to streamline processes for U.S. military members, veterans, and their families, providing specialized services and support.
Following each ceremony, USCIS encourages new citizens to share their naturalization stories and photos on social media using #NewUSCitizen, further celebrating their journey to becoming Americans.
