Director, Klaudia Kovacs, in collaboration with the late Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC, and legendary cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs, ASC, has made a dynamic, American-Hungarian film about the fall of communism worldwide in relation to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
Klaudia Kovacs’ feature-length documentary covers 1945 through 1991; it presents the rivalry between the superpowers at the time and shows the 1956 Revolt as a catalyst for the advancement of democracy that foreshadowed the Soviet system’s demise. Torn from the Flag juxtaposes the struggle for freedom of the individual against the impersonal decisions of world politics. The movie presents a broad range of viewpoints. Political notables such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, Otto von Habsburg, and Arpad Goncz appear in person or in archives.
The eight-time-award-winning movie participated in the Oscar competition in the “Best Documentary” category and received favorable reviews in the media:
“Superb. …a documentary thriller…” – Chuck Wilson, LA Weekly
“…a definitive account…the most comprehensive chronicle of the Hungarian uprising yet caught on film…the film never bogs down…a lively piece of history, put together with a good deal of technical skill as well as unmistakable passion…” — Stephen Farber, Hollywood Reporter
“It chains you to your seat and helps us understand what freedom truly means.” — Leslie Eloed, American Hungarian Journal
Ms. Kovacs immigrated to the United States from Hungary at age 19. Since then she has gained a broad background in the entertainment field: she has directed and/or produced multiple documentaries, films, and stage plays.
Torn from the Flag can be viewed online in English and in Hungarian.
