Shaping Africa’s Tomorrow: STEM Triumphs at the 2023 AFRICA’S BRAIN BANK® Summit in Los Angeles
The AFRICA’S BRAIN BANK® and Charity Ball event, hosted at The Hyatt Regency in Los Angeles from September 1st to the 4th, 2023, stands as an exceptional Pan-African gathering, leaving an indelible mark on recent Los Angeles memory. This event passionately championed the pivotal role of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) as the cornerstone for Africa’s sustainable development, under the theme “S.T.E.M. – Africa’s Gateway to Economic Freedom and Power.”
The event offered the perfect opportunity for The Immigrant Magazine to introduce the STOP THE HATE campaign to the audience of influencers, leaders, and community.
Over three unforgettable days, the event unfolded as a vibrant tapestry, interweaving culture, entertainment, and profound intellectual and spiritual awakening.
Commencing with a heartfelt opening prayer by Rev. Pastor Sauls and later by a Prayer for World Peace and Love by Dr. Hong, President of FOWPAL, it drew distinguished leaders from Africa and the Diaspora.
Under the esteemed chairmanship of Nollywood Icon Richard Mofe-Damijo, affectionately known as RMD, the event brought together a coalition of African experts from various industry sectors, both from the diaspora and Africa. Notable speakers included:
- Dr. Ken Harris: 16th President & CEO-National Business League; Founded by Booker T. Washington, a renowned economist, international scholar, and Black business historian.
- HRM. NENE LOMO IV: Divisional Chief, Lomobiawe, an experienced traditional ruler and a beacon of hope and development in the Ada State.
- Dr. Diola Bagayoko, Ph.D.: AFRICA’s BRAIN BANK® STEM Director and Board Member, a distinguished physicist, and advocate for minority participation in STEM fields.

- Dr. Myrtis Randolph: Cardiology IT Consultant for GE HealthCare, a seasoned professional in healthcare technology.

The event featured a heartfelt tribute to Sir. William “Mickey” Stevenson, Motown’s pioneering First A&R Man, and the Motown Legends, with a special “Tribute to Motown” led by Viola Nwadike, a worship leader, gospel artist, and the Founder of Give an Ear Foundation.
The summit was further enlivened by the internationally acclaimed award winner, Septimius The Great, and the skills of DJs Nice, Jerry Leo Skeeper, and D. J Franciscoli (Francis Ngam), adding a touch of light-heartedness.
At the heart of the event, Dr. Nkem-Amin Khumbah, Chairman of Africa’s Brain Bank, delivered a compelling keynote address, masterfully encapsulating the pressing challenges faced by the Pan-African community.
Dr. Khumbah, a distinguished lecturer and member of the STEM-Africa Initiative at the University of Michigan, fervently urged all attendees to take proactive strides in reshaping the narrative through STEM initiatives.
Credit and appreciation are due to Rev. Dr. Pamela Fomunung, the visionary CEO of AFRICA’S BRAIN BANK®, a Clinical Pharmacist with unmatched compounding ingenuity, who has trained many Pharmacists and Technicians in both the US and abroad. Her passion for helping Africa led to the co-development of an ACT (Artemisinin-Based Combination Treatment), a registered malaria drug in Nigeria. A Visionary and Multitalented Woman of Faith, she orchestrated this transformative opportunity for the Pan-African community, fostering invaluable networking prospects and bestowing precious insights for strategic growth.
RMD’s closing remarks and vote of thanks resonated deeply with attendees, instilling unwavering hope by affirming that Africa’s dispersed Diaspora possesses a vast reservoir of knowledge and skills destined to converge and uplift the continent.
