In a significant development, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations for El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua for a period of 18 months. This decision follows Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas’ announcement on June 13, 2023, to rescind the terminations of these designations from 2017 and 2018 and reinstate them for the same duration.

The extension of TPS comes after careful consideration of the prevailing conditions in El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua, and consultations with interagency partners. DHS consistently monitors global conditions to determine whether new TPS designations are warranted.

To maintain their TPS status during the 18-month extension, beneficiaries under the four designations must re-register. Previously, DHS extended the validity of TPS-related documentation for current beneficiaries until June 30, 2024, to comply with court orders relating to the litigation challenging the terminated decisions. The latest notices do not impact this action. Re-registration is open only to individuals who were previously granted TPS under the earlier designations of El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua.

It’s important to note that individuals who arrived in the United States after the specified continuous residence dates for these designations are not eligible for TPS. The respective continuous residence dates are Feb. 13, 2001, for El Salvador; Dec. 30, 1998, for Honduras; June 24, 2015, for Nepal; and Dec. 30, 1998, for Nicaragua.

Here are the specifics for each country’s TPS extension:

El Salvador: The TPS designation for El Salvador has been extended for 18 months, from Sept. 10, 2023, through March 9, 2025. Around 239,000 current TPS beneficiaries can re-register to maintain their TPS status until March 9, 2025. Re-registration must be completed during the 60-day re-registration period from July 12, 2023, through Sept. 10, 2023.

Honduras: The TPS designation for Honduras has been extended for 18 months, from January 6, 2024, through July 5, 2025. Approximately 76,000 existing TPS beneficiaries can re-register to retain their TPS status until July 5, 2025. Re-registration is open during the 60-day re-registration period from Nov. 6, 2023, through Jan. 5, 2024.

Nepal: The TPS designation for Nepal has been extended for 18 months, from Dec. 25, 2023, through June 24, 2025. Around 14,500 existing TPS beneficiaries can re-register to maintain their TPS status until June 24, 2025. Re-registration must be completed during the 60-day re-registration period from Oct. 24, 2023, through Dec. 23, 2023.

Nicaragua: The TPS designation for Nicaragua has been extended for 18 months, from Jan. 6, 2024, through July 5, 2025. Approximately 4,000 current TPS beneficiaries can re-register to retain their TPS status until July 5, 2025. Re-registration is open during the 60-day re-registration period from Nov. 6, 2023, through Jan. 5, 2024.

It is crucial to adhere to the designated re-registration periods to maintain TPS status.

The rescission of the terminations of these four countries’ TPS designations is effective from June 9, 2023.
