Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, September 5, 2017 – United States-based South Asian conglomerate 8K Miles Media Group has signed an exclusive theatrical distribution deal for the North American market with top actor/producer Arjun Rampal for the feature film “Daddy,” based on a true story of gangster turned politician Arun Gawli, the announcement was made today by Prashant Shah, president, 8K Miles Media Group. The biopic, that stars Arjun Rampal in the lead role, will be released worldwide on September 8, 2017 on over 1100 screens, including 60 screens across the United States and Canada. “Daddy” will open in major North American cities including Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Atlanta, Toronto and Vancouver, as well as worldwide in London, Dubai, Melbourne and Sydney.

Arjun Rampal’s inspiration to make the film stemmed from the worldwide popularity of the TV series “Narcos” about Mexican drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, which resonated immensely with audiences in India. His realistic and gritty portrayal of Arun Gawli has been compared to Wagner Moura’s critically-acclaimed performance as Escobar.

“The similarities and parallels between the true life stories of these two extremely controversial figures Pablo Escobar and Arun Gawli were very interesting to me,” comments Rampal, who also co-wrote the script. “The TV series Narcos was extremely popular with Indian audiences, and inspired me to bring the real life story of one of the most feared criminals from the Mumbai underworld to the big screen.”

8K Miles Media Group Signs North American Theatrical Distribution Deal for Biopic “Daddy” Based On The True Life Story of Mumbai Underworld’s Most Feared Gangsters“We believe that Bollywood film Daddy has great potential to achieve major success in the North American box office, due to both the subject matter and the popularity of the biopic genre,” adds Shah. “At a time when filmmakers are pushing the envelope to meet the hunger of audiences craving original content, Daddy is the perfect vehicle to fill the vacuum created by Narcos.

From the rough streets and back alleys of Mumbai comes the sensational true story of Arun Gawli, a man who scripted his own destiny, eventually going on to become one of India’s most renowned gangsters.
Today, Gawli remains an enigmatic and complex figure, both the volatile, power-hungry criminal and the respected “Daddy” or modern day Robin Hood for the working-class factory neighborhood to which he belonged. An unfolding jigsaw puzzle told from different points-of-view and spanning over four decades, “Daddy” provides an unforgettable look into the Mumbai underworld.

The film, directed and co-written by Cannes Film Festival nominee Ashim Ahluwalia (“Miss Lovely” Un Certain Regard, 2012), boasts an all-star cast including Arjun Rampal, Aishwarya Rajesh, Nishikant Kamat, Anand Ingale, Rajesh Shringarpore and Purnanand Wandekar. Award-winning Canadian cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné and editor Deepa Bhatia (“My Name is Khan”) also worked on the film.

One of today’s most successful Bollywood actors, Arjun Rampal played the lead role in “We Are Family” (2010) opposite Kajol and Kareena Kapoor. He also produced and starred in “I See You” (2006), won a National Film Award for his supporting role in “Rock On!!” (2008), nominated for the same award for his work in “Raajneeti” (2011) and garnered critical acclaim for “D-Day” (2013), “Ra.One” (2011) and “Om Shanti Om” (2007).
