Uniting Against Hate: The Immigrant Magazine’s Commitment and Your Business’s Role
Magazine, The Immigrant Experience, #STOPTHEHATE, Pamela Asobo Anchang, Editor-in-chief
The Immigrant Magazine is unwavering in its dedication to being the voice of all immigrants in the United States who strive relentlessly to become exemplary citizens while supporting their families and communities. This journey, though often rewarding, is not without its challenges. Many immigrants, fleeing persecution, limited opportunities in their home countries, and even conflict, sometimes encounter racism, xenophobia, and prejudice in the diverse tapestry of America.
With heartfelt appreciation for the resources funded, in part, by the State of California—under the administration of the California State Library, in collaboration with the California Department of Social Services and the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs—as part of the Stop the Hate program, The Immigrant Magazine takes immense pride in spearheading a movement to empower the experiences of black immigrants, not only in California but across the nation.
Yet, we recognize that this mission cannot be undertaken by any single group. Our lives are intricately intertwined, whether in our businesses, places of worship, workplaces, educational institutions, or within our communities. Therefore, as we embark on this vital mission, it is essential to begin by thoroughly exploring the nuances of this initiative and consider how it can seamlessly integrate into our daily lives as entrepreneurs.
Together, we can forge powerful partnerships and collectively contribute to a more inclusive and harmonious society.
The Shared Objective
Our goal is unequivocal: to confront and eliminate the persistent hatred, discrimination, and prejudice faced by Black immigrants within our communities. This mission serves as a resounding call for unity, an unwavering call to action, and a steadfast commitment to shaping a more inclusive society. As an editor of African descent, I have the privilege of offering my perspective on the urgent need to acknowledge the presence of hate, both among us and directed against us.
Collectively, we will explore the pivotal role that businesses can play as partners in this movement, illuminating the path toward a brighter, more inclusive future.
The Crucial Historical Context
Before we delve into the role of businesses as allies in combating hate against individuals of African descent, it is imperative that we acknowledge our historical context.
I recently had the privilege of immersing myself in an enlightening lecture on YouTube titled “IN THE NAME OF God, People WERE ENSLAVED. PLO LECTURES. About the ORIGINS OF SLAVERY.” This lecture was delivered by the esteemed Professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, widely known as PLO, and it coincidentally marked a poignant starting point for our collective journey as individuals of African descent. This holds particular significance within the context of our ongoing #STOPTHEHATEAGAINSTBLACKPEOPLE initiative.
Understanding our origins holds profound significance; it not only offers us insights into our heritage but also provides guidance as we navigate our path forward. As I contemplate my own journey in the realm of media, I must underscore the importance of comprehending your role in the issues that surround you, whether you are pursuing your career aspirations or managing your businesses. Failing to secure a seat at the decision-making table can often mean becoming part of the menu, as tragically witnessed during the eras of colonization and the transatlantic slave trade. This brings us to the core of our discussion today.
Throughout history, Black immigrants have endured systematic marginalization and discrimination, shouldering the burden of racial bias while grappling with entrenched stereotypes and prejudices.
The Challenge
In California, Black individuals, including Black immigrants, represent a mere 6% of the population. Yet, they disproportionately bear the brunt of hate incidents solely due to their ethnicity, compelling us to focus our collective attention and take decisive action.
Consider the following questions:
- Have you ever suspected that your race played a role in your ability to secure a loan, job, promotion, or opportunity? What actions did you take?
- How often have you heard about a hate incident involving a Black immigrant or Black individual? What steps did you take?
- Have you felt fear during a police encounter? As parents, have you worried about your children’s safety due to a racist neighbor or police officer? What proactive measures did you take? If you’ve felt powerless, it’s time to reconsider.
- Think about the treatment of Africans in Ukraine when the war broke out. Would it matter your wealth or status, all they saw was the color of their skin.
- Today, let us recognize that our well-being and success in our careers or businesses are intertwined. This is why we must collectively grasp the following:
The Power of Partnerships
As business leaders and community influencers, we possess the capacity to be partners in this campaign. Partners actively support and stand with marginalized communities, advocating for their rights and well-being.
