10th Anniversary Year begins today
Today – Tuesday, May 5, 2015 – is the 10th anniversary of the Arab American National Museum’s opening. The AANM remains the ONLY museum in America focused on the history and contributions of Arab Americans. Major national arts conference this Friday & Saturday
The sixth convening of DIWAN: A Forum for the Arts takes place at AANM this Friday and Saturday, May 8-9, featuring performances and presentations by Arab American artists and scholars from across the U.S.A. working in diverse creative genres. Two new exhibitions open now at AANM
The first official event of the AANM’s 10th Anniversary Year is TEN: The Exhibition, a group show curated by art historian and writer Maymanah Farhat. The exhibition revisits the concept of the AANM’s inaugural exhibition, In/Visible, by examining the current creative output and increasing visibility of art by Arab Americans. TEN’s 10 artists area Hamdi Attia; Dena Al-Adeeb; Sama Alshaibi; Youmna Chalala; Joyce Dallal; Lalla Essaydi; Joe Namy; Wafer Shayota; Mary Tuma; and Nazar Yahya. Through October 5, 2015, in the Main Floor Gallery; free with Museum admission.

Revolutionary works by a leading Sudanese artist/illustrator are exhibited for the first time on U.S. soil in It’s Not Funny: Political Cartoons by Khalid Albaih. The Qatar-based Albaih rose to prominence early in the Arab Spring, his iconic images have been used by activists in his native Sudan, as well as Yemen, Tunisia and Syria, and have been stenciled on walls by protestors in Lebanon and Egypt. Albaih will be in Dearborn this Saturday and Sunday, May 9-10, to present at DIWAN: A Forum for the Arts and for a free public program. Through July 30, 2015, in the 2nd floor Atrium; free with Museum admission.

The Museum is located at 13624 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI, 48126. Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Closed Monday, Tuesday; Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Admission is $8 for adults; $4 for students, seniors and children 6-12; ages 5 and under and Museum Members, free.
