On Wednesday January 24, 2018 while speaking about the fate of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US by their families as children President Trump echoed some much needed solace to DACA recipients. For the first time since the government shutdown President Donald Trump explicitly offered the possibility of a pathway to citizenship for the Dreamers as they are known.
“We’re going to morph into it. It’s going to happen at some point in the future,” he said.
In speaking about this further with reporters at a Whitehouse meeting with chief of staff John Kelly at the White House the President suggested it would be an “incentive” for these residents who are hardworking and have known no other country than the US as their home.
“If they do a great job, I think it’s a nice thing to have the incentive of, after a period of years, being able to become a citizen,” The President said.
Reiterating his point the President offered reassurances that the Dreamers should not be worried about deportation should their status expire.
“Tell them not to be concerned, OK? Tell them not to worry about it. We’re going to solve the problem. Now, it’s up to the Democrats, but they should not be concerned.”
