World Premiere Set for Saturday, July 13th in West Hollywood
LOS ANGELES, July 13, 2024 – The highly anticipated indie film “Mother-In-Law” is set to make its world premiere on Saturday, July 13th, 2024, at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. The event will kick off with a star-studded red carpet at 6:30 p.m., promising an evening of glitz and glamour.
Directed by Prince Joshua Kofi Morrison Budukuma, “Mother-In-Law” is a unique romantic comedy that delves into themes of family ties, commitment, classism, and cultural traditions against the backdrop of contemporary Black love. The story begins with a little blue Tiffany box: an African man proposes to his African American girlfriend, who says yes, setting off a whirlwind of wedding planning complicated by the antics of a meddling MOTHER-IN-LAW.
The film stars a stellar cast, featuring Hollywood veterans including Vivica A. Fox (“Kill Bill: Vol 1,” “Set It Off,” “Independence Day”) and Miguel Núñez Jr. (“The Family Business,” “Black Dynamite,” “Juwanna Mann,” “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps”), alongside rising star Ciarra Carter (“Keeping up With the Joneses,” “American Badboy”). Joining them are acclaimed African actors Adjetey Anang (“Azali,” “Children of the Mountain,” “Devil in Detail”) and Patience Ozokwor, also known as “Mamma G” (“After the Proposal,” “Cake,” “Knock Out,” “Turning Point,” “New Jerusalem”).
A Heartwarming Tale of Love and Cultural Clash
“Mother-In-Law” presents a heartwarming and humorous exploration of wedding nuptials challenged by cultural differences and family expectations. The narrative centers on Kumi, an immigrant fine arts photographer, and Koya, his African American employer and a magazine publisher. Despite the cultural challenges, the couple is determined to marry. However, their plans are thwarted by Kumi’s strict cultural traditions and the skepticism of Koya’s parents.
Kumi’s mother, Mama Sallia, makes an emergency trip from Africa to the U.S. to “fix things” before the wedding plans spiral out of control. She secretly arranges for Kiola, another African lady, to marry her daughter Chioma to Kumi. On the other side, Koya’s parents, the Samuels, are upset with Mama Sallia’s interference. As the wedding approaches, Koya is kidnapped at the altar, leading to a media frenzy and court proceedings. The story unfolds with suspense and humor, questioning whether love can triumph over the will of the mother-in-laws.
