On February 24, the office of the Los Angeles City Council President Pro Tempore Curren Price and the U.S. Africa Institute hosted an inspiring event to commemorate Black History Month. The event took place at the LA City Hall Chamber and welcomed the African and Caribbean Diplomatic Corps, along with dignitaries from the city of Los Angeles, community members, and well-wishers.

Los Angeles Mayor, Karen Bass Encourages Collaboration and Partnership with Africa

The keynote speaker for the event was LA Mayor Karen Bass, who emphasized the need to recognize Africa as a continent with great potential for partnership with the city and the United States as a whole. She encouraged attendees to continue to collaborate and build strong ties with one another.

Other notable speakers at the event included 8th District Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Councilmember of the 10th district, Heather Hutt, Dr. Tadios Belay (President and CEO of the U.S. Africa Institute), Rwanda Ambassador, Professor Mathilde Mukantabana, Kenyan Consul General Thomas Kwaka Omolo, South African Consul-General Thandile B Sunduza, Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Ahmed Shaheen, Honorary Consul of Sierra Leone Isatu Timbo Nwokedi, and Consul of Belize, Carolyn McKenzie.

The speakers highlighted the significance of close collaboration and building strong relationships with one another. The inaugural event was a collaboration between the office of the Los Angeles City Council President Pro Tempore Curren Price and the U.S. Africa Institute, both of whom are committed to promoting positive relations between Africa and the United States.
