Empowering the Next Generation: How EXPOSE is Opening Doors to STEM Opportunities for Underrepresented Youth
EXPOSE, a California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through education, entrepreneurship, and leadership development, recently sent a group of enthusiastic students to the University of Pittsburgh for an immersive summer camp experience. This initiative was part of EXPOSE’s ongoing commitment to fostering educational opportunities and hands-on learning experiences for youth in underrepresented communities.
The summer camp, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh in collaboration with the Swanson School of Engineering and Leading for Life, offered students a unique opportunity to engage with advanced engineering concepts and participate in a variety of experiments. Throughout their stay, students were introduced to cutting-edge technology and innovative projects that aimed to ignite their interest in STEM fields.
“Attending the camp opened my eyes to the vast possibilities in engineering,” said Charlotte, a high school senior who participated in the program. “I never realized how many different paths you can take in this field.”
Ikhena, another student, shared his enthusiasm, saying, “Before attending this camp, I was still unsure about what career path to take. But after experiencing the hands-on projects, meeting engineers, and seeing the real-world applications of what we were learning, my mind is made up—I definitely want to be an engineer. The camp showed me that engineering isn’t just about building things; it is about solving problems and making a difference in the world.”
Destiny also shared her experience, saying, “I used to think engineering was all about math, but now I see there are so many different areas. The Swanson School of Engineering offers so much support, and I know they’ll guide me along the way if I choose to pursue this path.”
“Seeing our students actively engaged in such a dynamic learning environment was incredibly rewarding,” said Monalisa Okojie, Founder & Executive Director of EXPOSE. “The collaboration with the Swanson School of Engineering and Leading for Life has opened doors for our youth, allowing them to explore future possibilities in engineering and beyond.”
During their time at the camp, students explored the University of Pittsburgh campus, interacted with faculty members from the Swanson School of Engineering, and worked alongside peers from diverse backgrounds. This experience not only broadened their academic horizons but also encouraged them to envision a future where they can make significant contributions to society through engineering and technology.
Monalisa Okojie also visited the camp to witness firsthand the impact of this partnership on the students. “Their excitement was palpable,” she said. “It is experiences like these that can truly shape their futures.”
As EXPOSE continues to expand its programs, we invite local and state governments, companies, corporations, and individuals to partner with us in providing these life-changing opportunities to more students. Your support is vital in helping us sustain and grow this program, ensuring that youth from underrepresented communities have access to the resources and experiences they need to succeed.
