Educational Excellence in Immigrant children

June 8, 2010 @ No Comments

familyOver the past few years, some of you have come to know me as a skincare columnist for The Immigrant Magazine. While I enjoyed writing about the latest skincare and beauty tips and sharing ideas to keep you looking your best, it’s time to move on. I know that you will be very excited about our new column, as you were about the skincare column.

If you are an immigrant parent raising children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews in this country, this column is for you. Through a series of interviews with immigrant parents and children, this column will explore different ideas for raising intelligent, emotionally balanced children who excel academically. Not only is parenthood a challenge, in and of itself, it is even more of a challenge when a parent from another country living in the United States tries to raise intelligent children amidst a culturally and economically diverse climate. Parents coming in to the United States from different countries have a unique set of challenges to deal with when raising their children. Not only is the cultural climate different from that of their home country, certain economic realities force parents to make very tough choices about their children.

Not withstanding differences in culture and other factors, several immigrant parents have raised academically and emotionally successful children who have become successful athletes, medical doctors, teachers, professors, engineers, architects and scientists. How do they do it? This is the purpose of this column – to share some specific strategies and techniques that these parents have used to assist their children to excel. This column presents an opportunity for you to see what other parents are doing to raise successful children so that you too can adopt some of these ideas for our own situation. We invite you to archive a copy of this column for future reference, and also share it with anyone you know that has kids.

For each column, we will explore different ideas from different parents about what strategies they use for their children. As an immigrant mother of 3 children, I too look forward to learning a lot from other parents about how to help my 3 children excel academically. Stay tuned!
