Description:
The Metrology Technician 4 is distinguished by demonstrated competence in a variety of disciplines, the high degree of complexity of diagnostic methods, and by the advanced level of technical direction/instruction given. Independently services, repairs and calibrates the most complex test and measuring equipment in the RF spectrum. Goes beyond normal diagnostic and corrective shop practice to solve problems and perform repairs. Expected to assume complex repair jobs from less skilled technicians. Develops methods and diagnostic techniques not previously available. Adapts measuring equipment, standards and techniques to accomplish unique measurements of the highest accuracy. Routinely reviews measurement processes and implements actions necessary to reduce measurement uncertainty. Develops and documents procedures, methods and systems for performing measurements. Assists equipment users in devising methods and procedures for obtaining measurements and may be required to operate the equipment/systems for unique of difficult measurements. Contacts equipment suppliers to obtain detailed technical information on calibration and repair methods and parts information. Coordinates the activities of non-exempt technical personnel, including the assignment and technical review of work. Takes a lead role identifying training needs and resources and takes appropriate action. Operates and develops software for instrument controllers/computers. Takes initiative to obtain training or related education to keep abreast of current and state-of-the-art technologies.

Basic Qualifications: Two (2) years of technical, vocational or pre-engineering education and seven (7) years experience in metrology functions. Demonstrated experience in progressively more complicated calibration and maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of precision measuring equipment and calibration systems. Research Assistant will have a broad knowledge of measurement theory application and processes. The individual in this position is expected to: provide leadership, require minimal supervision and independently solve problems.

Develops diagnostic techniques and adapts equipment to accomplish necessary repairs and measurements. Adapts measuring equipment, standards and techniques to accomplish unique measurements beyond their routine uses. Documents procedures, methods and systems for performing measurements. Assists equipment users in devising methods and procedures for obtaining measurements and may be required to operate the equipment/systems for unique or difficult measurements. Contacts equipment suppliers to obtain detail technical information on calibration and repair methods and parts information. Trains less skilled technicians in methods, concepts, and procedures. Participates in on-the-job training and related formal education. Operates computer software for instrument controllers/computers following established formats and programs.

Basic Quailifications: Two years of technical, vocational or pre-engineering education and three years experience in metrology functions is preferred. Demonstrated experience in progressively more complicated calibration and maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of precision measuring equipment and calibration systems. Must have thorough knowledge of measurement theory application and processes in more than one discipline.
