Hispanic millennials are turning their backs on Spanglish—a slang that mixes English-language norms into Spanish—and instead opting for proper American English.

“The typical trend is that the first [generation] prefers to speak Spanish, the second generation is bilingual, and the third generation is generally monolingual,” Jody Agius Vallejo, an associate professor of sociology at USC who studies immigrant integration told the Los Angeles Times.

But there is more going on than the natural trajectory of how immigrant groups assimilate to become Americans.

For the un-initiated, Jazz Appreciation Month, (fondly called JAM) was created at the Smithsonian Museum in 2002 to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the month of April. The intent was to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz, study the music, attend concerts/festivals, listen to jazz on the radio and recordings, read books and magazines about jazz, etc.

I first saw Prince as an audience member, back in 1981, when I was on a first date. My proper Bermudian beau and I had dressed in our Sunday best. We awkwardly sat front and center in orchestra seats watching this superhuman little being gyrate across the stage performing music that defied anything I had heard before. When the Purple One jumped to the highest pillar of his stage, grabbed a guitar and ejaculated light into the audience, I thought I was going to turn purple myself. Barely 20 years old and far more naive than my tender age belied, I dared not look at my date for fear that he might imagine that any such thing might happen with us!

OAKLAND, Calif. — Jesus Pina Sanchez remembers all too vividly that morning two years ago when he was crossing the street near his home and got hit by a car in the crosswalk.

The then15-year-old was rushed by ambulance to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, X-rayed and treated for the bruises he suffered. He was discharged later that day and his parents were slapped with a $10,000 bill, which weeks later went to collections.

With the help of a pro bono attorney, the Sanchez family was not only able to squash the bill but to get $5,000 in settlement from the driver.

LOS ANGELES, CA– The 14th annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) concluded on Sunday evening (April 10) with a red carpet and gala fete that featured the North American premiere of Anu Menon’s poignant and stirring feature, WAITING starring Kalki Koechlin who was in attendance, as well as the presentation of the festival’s Grand Jury and Audience Choice Awards.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Getting a green card can be a long, arduous process for many immigrants. Some even have to wait for 25 years or spend tens of thousands of dollars to get legal permanent residency in the United States.

Because of this, legal permanent residents who are eligible for naturalization often think that applying for U.S. citizenship is harder than it really is.

“They fear that they won’t pass the test and interview. They fear that their English is not good enough,” Marina Gundorin, immigration supervisor at the Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte, said at a recent ethnic media convening here. “And they fear that they won’t be able to afford the application fee.”
