LIVING WELL :SPICE SECRETS :

 

Hello, I'm Smita Salgaonkar, the writer of a new column called 'Spice Secrets'. I am the Founder and President of Neemo's Exotic Ice Creams. We create and manufacture ice cream with exotic flavors such as Saffron Pistachio Rose, Mango, Jackfruit and many, many more. The idea started out of a passion for making unique ice cream flavors in a 'home' ice cream machine and was launched into a business in early 2001. The company was named after my two daughters Nikita and Monica. In 2005, I co-founded a snack bar 'Saffron Spot', which features Neemo's Exotic Ice creams along with other Indian snack foods and desserts.

Why write about spices? I have always been intrigued and fascinated by spices. Without spices, food is just too simple; add a dash of the right spice and it will make a dish come alive! Spices have been around since ancient times and used for a variety of reasons from food preservation to flavoring as well as for medicinal purposes. Spices have been coveted by all, countries have been plundered and wars have been fought, all over spices!

With each column I want to bring some spice into your life! I will give you a brief history and background of that spice. I will also be featuring a simple recipe that you can try at home. I hope you will enjoy my column.
