The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival will add some tasty sounds to the musical gumbo of Jazz Fest with some spicy Latin sounds and world music.

“Fela!,” which is based on the life of the charismatic Kuti and is highlighted by many of Kuti’s most captivating songs, has a book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones, music and lyrics by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, additional lyrics by Jim Lewis, additional music by Aaron Johnson and Jordan McLean, and was conceived by Bill T. Jones, Jim Lewis and Stephen Hendel. “Fela!” features the visionary direction and choreography of two-time Tony Award-winner Jones (“Fela!” and “Spring Awakening”), who was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2010.
The Ghanaian star has had a stellar year with the success of his NAACP Image Award nominated "Hymns For the Rebel Soul" album as well as winning the "Best African Artist" at the International Reggae & World Music Awards held in Trinidad.
The history behind Acoustic Africa began with a 2006 Putumayo label release of the same name featuring a handful of African musicians. The original Acoustic Africa tour showcased the talents of Mali’s Habib Koite, South Africa’s Vusi Mahlasela, and the Ivory Coast’s Dobet Gnahore. However, the most recent Acoustic Africa tour lineup features Zimbabwe’s Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, and Mali’s Afel Bocoum and Habib Koite. All are big name guitarists and performers in the world music community with several-dozen solo and collaborative albums produced between them since the 1970’s.
