Supreme Court Weighs Future of Affirmative Action-- What's At Stake for Students of Color?

On Oct. 31, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on two cases — SFFA v. Harvard and SFFA v. University of North Carolina — that will determine the future of affirmative action. The cases bring together universities, civil rights organizations, and student activists in support of race-conscious admissions policies and equitable education access for students of color.

#CaliforniansForAll College Corps Fellows Brings Relief To Students

This month 3,200 students – sworn in by Gov. Newsom at a swearing-in ceremony in Sacramento on Friday, Oct. 7 – begin their first academic year as College Corps fellows at one of 46 partnering colleges and universities across the state. Each student will receive up to $10,000 for completing a year of service in the community, either tutoring and mentoring low-income students, distributing meals to those facing food insecurity, or taking climate action. 80% of fellows are students of color, 58 percent are first-generation college students, and 68% are Pell grant eligible. 500 fellows are AB 540 Dream Act students.

With the mid-terms fast approaching, a briefing recently hosted by EMS( Ethnic Media Servics) explored threats to the way elections are run in the US — not just who gets to vote, but how and whether the votes get counted. Discussions centered around gerrymandered maps that diminish the power of voters of color, laws that restrict access to the polls, efforts by partisan poll workers to interfere in the election process, among other dangerous trends, and efforts to address them, including two lawsuits by civil rights groups in Alabama and Louisiana being argued before the Supreme Court on Oct. 4.

Many scientific inventions, theories, and laws that built the foundations for future scientific studies are credited to Hispanic-Latinos scientists, while engineers from this community are developing new technology to help us grasp our clean energy future.
