EXPORTS ON THE RISE

by Sherice Bellamy

Lower interest rates and the decrease in the value of the U.S. dollar have led to an increase in export sales abroad. While some struggle with the effects of an apparent recession, others are taking advantage of the opportunity to increase business by focusing on world markets. Which side of the coin are you? The glass is either half full or half empty depending on where you stand. We’re paying more for imports, but U.S. exports are on the rise. The U.S. Census Bureau recently reported increases in the export of industrial supplies and materials; foods, feeds and beverages; and consumer goods (http://www.census.gov/indicator/www/ustrade.html)..

What are foreign buyers purchasing?

Everything! They are purchasing a variety of products and almost anything you can think of can be sold in the global marketplace. Some of the more popular product categories include:

1. Pharmaceuticals
2. Chemicals & Cosmetics
3. Medical Products
4. Laboratory Equipment
5. Generators
6. Food
7. Clothing
8. Computers & Accessories
9. Hardware Items
10. Air Conditioners
11. Cars & Auto Parts
12. Construction Machinery
13. Oil Field Equipment
14. Fertilizer
15. Environmental Items

The purpose of this list is to assist you with brainstorming ideas, but you may be as creative as you like and choose a product of which you have knowledge or interest.

The above list was taken from The WBE.NET Global Internet Trade Course: A Practical Study Guide for U.S. Export Trade Agents. Additional resources for identifying product categories are the U.S. Census Bureau (www.census.gov) and the U.S. Department of Commerce (http://www.export.gov/industry/index.asp). Each allows you to research U.S. exports by country, state, industry, commodity, and other identifying characteristics.
As a member of the WBE International Trade Association, however, you will be able to search for reliable trade leads at www.wbe.net. WBE provides access to buyers, sellers, manufacturers and distributors. In addition to their extensive list of trade leads, they will direct you to outside resources that can help you identify trade opportunities, as well.
