When you are taking one or more different medications at one time, it can be difficult to remember what each medication is used for, how and when to take it, what side effects to watch out for.
As a patient, it is important to protect yourself whether you are at your doctor's office, hospital, pharmacy, and/or home. To do this, try following these safety tips:
The first important step is to create a list of all your current medications including any over the counter drugs, what medications you are allergic to, and what medical conditions you currently or previously had.
"What is this drug used for?"·
"How often should I take my medication?"
· "What is the best time to take this medication?"
"Should this medication be taken with or without food?"
"Are there any dairy products, fruit juices, and/or over the counter drugs that I should avoid while taking this medication?"
· "Is there any drug interaction?"
· "What side effects should I be aware of?"
· "What should I do if I miss my dose?"
If you are picking up a medication refill, it is important to check the name, strength, and the appearance of the drug. If you have trouble swallowing a tablet or capsule, ask if the medication comes in a different form (i.e. liquid). Most importantly, check the expiration date of each of your medications.
A good rule of thumb is to have only one doctor for all your medical needs and one pharmacy where you pick up all your medications. By following these helpful tips, it will help minimize the chances of receiving the wrong medication, minimize any drug interaction, decrease the possibility of receiving a duplicate therapy, or reduce the likelihood of developing an allergic reaction. Last but not least, never be afraid to ask your doctor or pharmacist to repeat the medication information to you.
