As the New Year begins, one can’t help but reflect on what was. But rather than just looking back at 2009, I wanted to take a look at the top 10 films of all time worldwide by box office numbers. An amazing fact became clear; 9 of the top 10 were released in the last decade. Titanic, $1.8 Billion released in 1997, is the #1 grossing film worldwide and the #2 film Avatar $1.6 Billion, are both James Cameron Films. Avatar is on track to tie or break the record of highest grossing film worldwide in the history of films. What makes this feat even more spectacular is that the other 8 in the top 10 are all franchise films; 3 Harry Potters, 2 Lord of the Rings, 2 Pirates of the Caribbean and 1 Batman: Dark Knight. James Cameron has the top 2 films and both were original 1st time films. However, with the success of Avatar, a new franchise has begun.
February is usually the month for all the hoopla surrounding Oscars big night, but not this year. The Year of the Tiger begins on Valentine’s day, February 14th – 2 days into the 21st Winter Olympic Games, taking place in Vancouver through February 28th, which caused the Academy Awards to move to March 2nd to avoid a possible decline in viewership.
